Included in this study about how technology and social media can hurt work productivity is a bit of information that explains how homework hurts children.

Microsoft Says It’s True: Cat Videos Distract Workers – Impact of technology on productivity depends on company culture

“… workers [can] suffer burnout because, with mobile devices and at-home-working, they feel tethered to the job around-the-clock.”

How is this connected? When my kids leave “work” or school for the day, they always bring it home with them. They always have homework.

My kids are assigned homework every single weekend. They are assigned homework over long weekends, breaks, and even the Christmas/winter holiday! Until this year, they were assigned homework over the summer as enrichment summer projects.

If adults can’t handle this, how do we expect kids to avoid burnout?

As if that isn’t bad enough, my son now has a professor in college who reaches out by text and email to add assignments in between classes that are due before the next class!

How does this compare to the experience of your own kids?

(P.S. And yes, I also used this opportunity to talk to my teens about how they need to learn how to minimize technology interruptions of work.)
