The Bamboo Forest in Haleakala National Park on Maui is an impressive sight and not to be missed! If you have time on your drive on the Road to Hana, you definitely want to do this bamboo forest hike. But please note that it’s located at the midway point on the Pipiwai TRAIL. Yes, you need to pay attention to that trail part. Because unlike what other blog posts may have led you to believe, you need to be prepared for a hike when you set off to see the Bamboo Forest. Maui’s Bamboo Forest in Haleakala National Park, just past Hana on the Road to Hana Drive, is the impressive Bamboo Forest hike you’ve probably heard about on Maui! I’d seen photos like this on blogs, with the comment that since it’s at the end of the road, there often wasn’t time to do this because of needing to drive back to the resort area. But even though they didn’t spend much time there, you should make sure you see it! I got the impression that those bloggers had gotten to the edge of the Bamboo Forest, snapped a photo, and then not had time to explore around inside it. But the truth is, the bamboo forest is a LONG way into the hike and you need to be prepared. You can’t just see it and leave. We decided to stay a night in Hana, so that we would have time to see sights like this. BONUS: the best waterfalls on Maui are on this hike – not just one, but two waterfalls!
Because we planned enough time, we saw the bamboo forest. Bloggers who said they didn’t have time to explore must have used stock photos – this is my own photo. We were actually there! And it was impressive and other worldly.
It was totally worth it!
To see the bamboo forest and the best waterfalls on Maui, you’ll need to be prepared with both time and supplies….
What’s the best stop on the Road to Hana? What was our favorite place? The black sand beach!
Seeing the rain forest out the windows of a moving car is great.
But it’s not the same as BEING in the rain forest.

To really enjoy snorkeling, you need more than fins and a mask! Based on that and experience, here are my recommendations for the best snorkeling gear for beginners….
While planning our family trip to Hawaii, we were looking for the best snorkeling in Maui. I planned based on our past snorkeling experiences and lots of internet and guidebook research. But unfortunately, our snorkeling in Maui was less than impressive.
I talked to some other visitors and we looked at lots of other beaches. Based on what we heard, the surf was unusually rough during our trip even though we were there for an entire week. However, even with the rough water, snorkeling was still great if you went out on a boat.
Here’s my plan for next time….
Everyone raves about snorkeling tours, or snorkeling boat trips. But we had so much fun snorkeling the Big Island off the beach that we passed them up at first. We got to go on our own schedule. So we went earlier in the day when visibility was better and sunburn was less.
But, to see what we were missing, we tried snorkeling boat trips in Cozumel and Florida.
Unfortunately, we found exactly what we were expecting.
Our experience with snorkeling tours
Snorkeling was high on our list of things to do in Maui planning our family trip to Hawaii. The first time my husband and I ever snorkeled was on the Big Island of Hawaii. We had the most AMAZING snorkeling experiences. So we were really looking forward to Maui Snorkeling.
Our Big Island trip was pre-internet and pre-kids. We bought a guide book and only snorkeled offshore beach access. We saw scores of tropical fish – like the yellow tangs pictured above, eels, and turtles. Those first snorkeling experiences became the inspiration for the underwater scenes in my children’s book about a mermaid, Miri Attwater and the Ocean’s Secret.
Everywhere we snorkeled on the Big Island, we went early in the morning off a beach. We left when the visibility was getting worse. And laughed as the snorkeling boat trips pulled up in droves as we got out! People were paying for a boat ride to see a worse version of what we’d seen for FREE.
We later tried a couple of boat snorkeling tours. They were both disappointments.
So for this trip, we prepared to snorkel Maui from shore….
