East Maui is where you'll find lush tropical rainforests and the black sand beaches of paradise! - Where to stay on MauiEast Maui is one of the three different areas we stayed in during our Maui vacation. Keeping the areas straight on even such a tiny island isn’t easy. Especially when all the guide books like to tell you that every location is wonderful!

Here are our impressions of East Maui.

East Maui – West Maui, South Maui, and East Maui compared

East Maui – Hana Highway Area

The tropical landscape here just can’t be beat. If you really want to see a rain forest on Maui, this is the place to go. East Maui includes Hana, on the eastern coast of Maui on the map.

There are great hikes and great waterfalls. This was my husband’s favorite part of the trip.

This is where you’ll find black sand beaches. They are gorgeous!

Maui East - Black sand beach

You might be able to do a little bit of swimming off the beaches here, but the sea is rough and often too rough to swim safely. Snorkeling is even less of an option.

There are no big resorts on this side of the island.

Read on to compare East Maui to South Maui and West Maui.
