East Maui is one of the three different areas we stayed in during our Maui vacation. Keeping the areas straight on even such a tiny island isn’t easy. Especially when all the guide books like to tell you that every location is wonderful!

East Maui – Hana Highway Area
The tropical landscape here just can’t be beat. If you really want to see a rain forest on Maui, this is the place to go. East Maui includes Hana, on the eastern coast of Maui on the map.
There are great hikes and great waterfalls. This was my husband’s favorite part of the trip.
This is where you’ll find black sand beaches. They are gorgeous!
You might be able to do a little bit of swimming off the beaches here, but the sea is rough and often too rough to swim safely. Snorkeling is even less of an option.
There are no big resorts on this side of the island.
