The new Star Wars movie, Episode 7, is coming out December 18th! Will your family be ready when the Force Awakens?

Will your family be ready when the Force Awakens? Full guide to introducing your kids or teens to the world of Star Wars.

Our family has a few Star Wars fans, as you can tell from some of our photos over the years. For Halloween the kids were Jedi Knights, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia more than once. (The girls wore a Princess Leia costume I made in high school. Yes, we had to tape up the hem and make some other adjustments. I’m not that short.) There was even a three-dimensional R2-D2 birthday cake.

So you’d think we’d all be ready for the new movie. But while our son was eager to watch the Star Wars live action movies…

Disney Cinderella glass slipperAre you like me and you haven’t seen the new Disney Cinderella movie yet?

Maybe you’re worried about showing your young daughter an out-dated fairy tale where a young maiden is distress is saved by a charming prince who swoops in and saves the day? Well the press information that Disney has released suggests that they really tried to do otherwise. Instead, they tried to produce a film that shows that “kindness can be a type of super power.”…

Strange MagicHow did we miss this?!? There’s a new George Lucas animated movie! Strange Magic, from Walt Disney Pictures, Lucasfilm Ltd. and released by Touchstone Pictures.

No one in this family had any idea this was coming. Granted, we don’t watch a ton of tv, but usually we know about every sci-fi and animated movie coming out. And anything by George Lucas would have definitely caught our notice, because, well – STAR WARS. We’re one of those families where not only dad, but mom as well, grew up as a Star Wars fan so the kids had no choice but to hear about it. Even if when we were talking about this movie my twelve-year-old did say, “Isn’t George Lucas dead?”…

Hollywood studios pooh drawing by Ivy in classOne of our favorite attractions at Disney Hollywood Studios was The Magic of Animation: Animation Academy at the Animation Station. My daughters are both artistic, so they were dying to go to a class, even though it meant devoting at least and hour out of a packed schedule. (Classes are generally every 30 minutes, but are often full, so be sure to check the schedule.) We sent the guys off to enjoy repeated rides on the Star Wars ride Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, while the girls headed to the class. In second week of June, we arrived early for the second-to-last session of the day, and didn’t have any trouble getting in….

These attractions aren’t really hidden in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World, but they’re not the top hyped spots either. Sometimes that’s because they’re not the newest attractions, so the Professional Disney Park Trippers have been to them too many times. But our family could be considered novices, this was our tween/teens first trip to the Disney Parks at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. (They had only been to Disneyland once.) Here are the spots we’re glad we didn’t skip, and some of them we could have done more than once….
